I loved all of the New Orleans references and the strong role that church played in this book. The theme of love and sacrifice really come to life in this book.I was able to relate to this book in so many ways. When he is finally able to be reunited, he is forced to make the choice of letting his loved one go to make another family happy or keep Buddy to make himself happy. Li'l T's strong efforts and determination are very evident in this book as he fights to get Buddy back. However, even though Buddy could not evacuate with his owner Li'l T, he was able to be rescued and then found living with another family in California. This, along with many other situations in the book are truly heart breaking. Buddy cannot fit in the car and is forced to stay behind. As this story goes on, New Orleans is undergoes the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The last step in healing Buddy is a loving home for recovery which Li'l T's family is kind enough to offer. Fortunately his church group is able to raise enough money to get Buddy the medical attention that he needs. Accidently hitting Buddy with the car turns Tyrone's life upside down. On his way to church, what seems like a typical Sunday turns into one of the greatest turning points in Li'l T's life. Li'l T, the main character of this story set in New Orleans, wants nothing more than the loyal companionship that a dog can offer.
